Striding Edge

Helvellyn & Striding Edge, a Lake District Classic, and there is no doubt about it. After Scafell Pike, Helvellyn would be the most trodden mountain in Lakeland. Just like most mountains, this popular summit has multiple routes to its flat summit plateau, but one route stands with much more stature than the rest, and that is Striding Edge.

Striding Edge is a 500m long arete that comes out of the Eastern side of Helvellyn. It has a strong reputation for its excellent scrambling and knife edge crest. Striding Edge is a fantastic experience, and can be used as a great introduction to scrambling!

We must not forget Swirral Edge, a similar but shorter edge standing opposite Striding Edge, and acting as Helvellyn’s ‘2nd arm’. Although shorter, it is a complementing way to descend Helvellyn after having gotten to its summit via Striding Edge.

If you want to tackle Helvellyn but would rather be guided then why not join us on one of our Diary walks, or you can even hire us our for some Private Guiding.

You may even want to learn the skills to know how to ‘Go it Alone’, so why not join us on a Navigation Course to learn the skills, and then put them into practise on Helvellyn after!
